I wish dogs (read: Gus) understood what waving was. I have this vision of myself crossing the dining room on a weekday morning to grab a snack and as I come back through, I’m mid-bite, mouth full of pear. so I wave a little wave and his tail thumps shyly against the leather sofa cushion, his eyes sparkling like “hi mommy!” and then I’d go back to my copy and he back to his 11:30 snooze.
as it stands now, I shuffle past him mid-morning and wave and he just stares blankly at me like “are you going to eat that?” even though I’m holding a hair clip in one hand and a box of matches in the other. odd boy, that one.
ok so what’s the deal with apple sauce?
really, though. it’s weird and reminds me sick people food. does anyone over the age of 8 actually eat it regularly? by itself? sans latkes? can we come up with a doctored version that feels decadent and delightful already? think apple pie without the crust.
the other day, I put on an old jacket I hadn’t worn since February and found unused napkins squirrelled neatly away for later use. when did I become my dad?
maybe that’s not a bad thing though. I should be so lucky!
I’ve done a lot of thinking about this, given we’ve had 9+ months to contemplate it, but I’ve finally decided. I can tell you with absolute certainty the very first place I will be visiting once covid-19 is officially in our rearview is…KAZU NORI. and I will order not one, but TWO extra scallop rolls.
until then, I’ll frequent yama seafood in san gabriel and pray for mr. yama’s continued good health in old age. I will make chirashi bowls and temaki that are delicious in their own right, but just not quite the same.
lastly,
I’m going to cap this issue with an unburied old note from my iphone’s notes app that I have NO recollection of writing, nor its reference.
it might have been may outside but in my heart, it was dark & stormy looooool. y’all. tumblr girl at heart, forevermore. no shame in my game.
now, I invite you to share a long forgotten or hastily jotted note from your phone!
***please, please please use this REPLY link OR if you just hit reply, include the photo in the -BODY- of your email, NOT as an attachment since I don’t seem to be getting attachments in the reply emails from substack. weird kinks, but let’s roll with it y’all!
